Privacy for end users, transparency for the infrastructure -the Nym approach to privacy

In this talk, I will discuss surveillance as a question of power, and describe the approach we take to privacy and transparency in the Nym architecture. When considering privacy and surveillance, it is easy to get confused and think that either everything is private and no one knows who is doing what, or that some things are visible and therefore the system is vulnerable to surveillance. In other words, we imagine that either the light is switched off and everything is in the dark, or it is switched on and we can see everything and everyone. But this is not how things really work: what matters is not whether the light is off or on, but who is observing what and for which purposes.
